The bizarre fruits* of research

Nota bene: this may become a series, depending on what sorts of things I stumble across.

While doing some historical research on the Catholic Church and her relationship to space knowledge/exploration/travel/etc1, I stumbled across this link. I laughed, mostly because the title was hilarious, and I wouldn’t put it past some nerdy Catholic astronomers (probably astronomer-priests, let’s be honest here) to name a telescope “light-bearer” because of its role in bringing the light of far-off stars to our eyes. Plus, it would be mocking the devil, which we as a Church love to do. Then, in the sidebar, I saw comments on another article… Flat Earth Images. “Huh,” I thought to myself. “This looks like an interesting article which could be about the progression of the flat earth model to the current round-earth model we have now.” I then read through the article, hoping for a segue into a sequel of some kind, and began to read the comments2

…this is a Flat Earther website. Honest to goodness. I now feel a little stupid, and suffice to say I won’t be reading this article unless there’s sources in the bottom. Today’s lesson: refine thy Google searches.

* I use the word “fruits” loosely — I’m not sure how fruitful this encounter was, but I’m laughing at myself and decided to share.

  1. Mostly Vatican Observatory research, to be honest — it’s for a book.
  2. Yes, I know. First rule of the internet: don’t read the comments.
